Need help with Windows grabber

Post by neopelago »

I have been using a simple XMLTV grabber with Win7 for several years to download raw XML data. Unfortunately, a recent virus attack on this computer somehow managed to upset that arrangement.

The batch file I use to call the grabber contains:

c:\xmltv\xmltv.exe tv_grab_na_dd --days 13 ^
--dd-data c:\tempfiles\xmltvdata\SD14-05-17.xml --download-only

The old tv_grab_na_dd.conf file in .xmltv (which seems to be largely obsolete) contains:

username: Myname
password: Mypass
timezone: -0600 (should be -0700 MST)
lineup: 0008200:- (should be 0008200:x)
channel: 25 ARTSC (obsolete channels)
...

When I run the batch file now from a command line, I just get the following error message:

Can't open perl script "-e" : No such file or directory

I have been through the documentation but have not been able to find anything helpful. So I will appreciate any advice anyone can give me about how to fix this.

That error doesn't make sense. :)

What is your full batch script?
Are you specifying the full path to the batch script?
Where did you get xmltv.exe? (recent version? alpha-exe? windows distribution? old computer?)

I suspect you're using a different tv_grab_na_dd.conf. I suggest you run tv_grab_na_dd --configure

Robert, thanks for your interest.
The full batch script if just as I listed it -- I just double-click that batch file to run it.
My xmltv.exe (etc.) apparently came from zip file xmltv-0.5.48-win32.zip dated 2007-09-06.
I'm afraid I don' t understand your suggestion that I run tv_grab_na_dd -- configure.
What would the whole DOS command line for that look like?

xmltv.exe tv_grab_na_dd --configure

(you just put xmltv.exe in front of any valid XMLTV command :) )

If you want a more recent copy you can just get xmltv.exe at http://alpha-exe.xmltv.org or the full windows distribution (includes some docs) at http://files.xmltv.org.

BTW, I suggest you also look at the directory %TEMP% and remove any pdk-* folders.

I will look into all of those things. Thanks again.

Not much luck in exploring alternatives:

First, I extracted my 2007 zip file to a new directory for a fresh start.
Next, I downloaded xmltv.exe from alpha-exe.xmltv.org to replace old one.
Next, I downloaded the full windows distribution from files.xmltv.org.
Also, I removed all pdk-* folders from %TEMP%

In each case, I tried this command:
[path]xmltv.exe tv_grab_na_dd --configure

In every case, I got the same eror message:
Can't open perl script "-e" : No such file or directory.

I hope this means something to somebody. Or are there other tests I could do to
help isolate the source of the problem?

It's very strange.. :)

Do you have a "space" or other weird character in your path? (That's a wild guess)

You can also remove everything from your path. (or in any of the parameters)

Code: Select all

mkdir c:\temp
copy \path\to\xmltv.exe c:\temp
PATH c:\temp
c:
cd \temp
xmltv.exe tv_grab_na_dd --configure
If that doesn't work, email admin@sd and I'll schedule a time when I can remote in and take a look. (I wrote tv_grab_na_dd and xmltv.exe)
